Fractional or Intentional?
What August Can Teach Us About The Future of Leadership
Washington is FINALLY sliding into the slow rhythm of August.
Congress is out. Outlook calendars are lighter. And for a few fleeting weeks, even this city of breathless news cycles and overachievers embraces something resembling leisure.
But what if this seasonal shift weren’t just a pause — but a preview?
In an upcoming episode of The Friday Reporter, I sit down with my friend Brian Athey — a brilliant marketing exec who’s now delivering sharp, high-impact leadership to multiple companies as a fractional CMO. Brian is also with a full-throated agency and hosts a killer podcast of his own (more on that in a September episode). He’s just one of several friends leaning into this new kind of executive role.
Just last month, another wise friend left her permanent general counsel position to build her own practice — stepping confidently into her new title as fractional GC. And the business? It’s pouring in. Some days she even takes calls from the pool.
And how about my independent journalism friends? Take Chris Cillizza or Tara Palmeri. Writing, hosting, speaking and leading in an environment that once kept them small - while the bosses were filling the coffers of traditional, legacy media.
These aren’t career pivots — they’re smart evolutions. And they’re happening more and more.
The idea of “fractional” leadership is becoming a model. It gives seasoned executives the freedom to design their work around impact rather than presence. It gives organizations access to elite talent without a full-time headcount. And it gives everyone a little more room to breathe.
As the nature of work continues to shift — toward flexibility, autonomy, and meaningful engagement — the rise of fractional roles feels less like a trend and more like a blueprint.
Maybe August isn’t just a vacation. Maybe it’s inspiration.
