The award-winning Highlands Current in Philipstown, New York is a model example of a local news organization taking big national stories and localizing them, as well as covering the twists and turns of all corners of the community — from town meetings to sports scores to events. Great column today.

There are so many little local papers that a shells of their former selves! The Courier-Post in Camden County and the Burlington County Times were there when a story was too far from Philly to merit attention from the Inky.

But even the little ones have been bought up in big Cox or Gannett acquisitions.

I still get the digital version of the Green Bay Press Gazette but that one feels much like your hometown paper. The one I think still does well is the weekly Vilas News up where my parent's cabin is in Eagle River. Great stories about the local community and my parents make sure to pick it up every week when they are there.

When I talk to journalism students, I recommend that they think about going to their home town or a place where they can start a newsletter and create videos by going to city council meetings, the Friday football games, etc, and make their mark. I think someone with a lot of hard work could re-invent local news in a way that works for how people get news today.
